bad news...again!

tali gitar putus and this time it's D. heck, tali hari tu yang putus pun tak ganti. this only means that i have to buy a new set. this time nak cuba letak 0.10-0.46. might be a little hard while bending but tone wise - one word - sedap.

anyway, my final project presentation is next week on thursday. hope everything will be ok. currently finishing up and fine tuning my system. wish me luck guys!

experience me?

"your music sounds like someone la..". and when that happens i feel that i haven't done enough or tried harder in making my sound totally original. how does someone comes out with something totally unheard of? something that people can't even relate to something else. i know that the problem is probably because of influence. music that you hear everyday and music that has come natural to your ears. so the question is - is it ok if you sound like somone else?

for me, that has always been the case. whenever i get this new riff, i play it again, record it with some cheap mic connected to may cheap soundcard. hear it for the first time - not bad. then hear it for the second time - wait a minute.. have my friend come over who happens to be my bandmate and he said, "this sounds totally like...". aiyaa.. there it is again.

the thing is.. i don't want to be just a guitar player. i want to be something else. i don't want to stay at my comfort zone. eventhough i'm happy at my side of the stage but you know when you keep on playing cover songs, you feel that you had enough. there must be something out there for me.

i don't mean it in a sense of being a rockstar if that's what you think. i just want to make something and be proud of it. be satisfied that i finally can do it. perhaps when people hear it, they'll gonna say," hey, this one's totally new". or perhaps they'll just stop and listen to the song till the end. just like clapton did when he heard one of SRV songs. i believe it was 'Pride and Joy'. correct me if wrong ok. but the point is that's the level that i want to achieve. i want to be. to be able to make people appreciate the song.

to date, i haven't wrote any new songs since the beginning of this year due to my busy and demanding schedule. hopefully after all of this is over, i could start writing songs again, play gigs and do whatever i want with my life.

busy bee that's me - but yet...

have i mention before i have no life whatsoever? this is the extended version of it. all of this is so overwhelming. i feel like a total super geek of the year or at least of this month.

but strangely enough i found myself liking it in ways that i can't describe. it's the same feeling when you learn a new guitar lick or a new song. once you know how to play it, you're gonna start to play with your heart. you code your program by identifying patterns just like you identify scales in a song. you design your codes the way you write your songs that follows some chord progression. a recurrence patterns occurs in your codes and its the same way when you play a song. you just repeat the same bar when you meet that tiny little two dots in your score. yet still, it's such a dauting task doing the same thing over and over again. the only thing i'm looking forward right now is the sign for the song to stop.

note : an infinite loop will cause serious damage to the program or in this case to the brain.

something came up to me, i wonder if the ability of my song writing is indirectly influence by my ability in programming. you know.. the loop type of thing, the structed manner of a code can also be applied to song right? t, any insights?

but then again.. there ain't no 'feel' in programming but only the satisfaction in seeing it run perfectly we designed it.

busy bee that's me

this week i have to submit 3 papers and also the final draft of my thesis. my web-system project isn't fully completed yet. infact, i still have 2 modules to complete. on top of that, it's full of bugs - debugging will only be done afterwards. not to mention i havn't done any testing yet. today i got my test results from my professor and its not encouraging. my professor concluded that the test scores does not potray my ability in its full potential. she (my professor) adds that the answers i wrote does not potray my ability when writing for assignments, discussion whatsoever. i replied by saying that if given ample time, i would've nail the test. the test was divided into 4 parts. and a lot of them needs analyzing the facts and data before we conclude any kind of answer. plus, the test also includes a one page study case of a company and its information system. do you know how much time was given to us for the test? it was only one hour. eventhough the whole class has the average score similiar to my score, i still feel that it's not fair for the test to be conducted in such a way. she adds that in her whole experience of studying in the US and UK test are conducted that way and we must learn to adapt to it. i feel that my grades are slipping away. the only thing that can make me at least forget about my worries is playing my guitar and that's only once and only when i have the mood to play. havn't gone out for a while for cinemas, taking a walk, hang out with my buddies, girlfriend('s), no dates, no anything. so it can be conclude that since the beginning of this year, i have no social life whatsoever. still hope i could see the silver lining in all of this.

Kenapa Open-Source? - Bahagian I

Di laporkan bahawa kos perbelanjaan kerajaan dalam pendidikan pada tahun 2000 adalah RM14.8 billion. Perbelanjaan itu seterusnya bertambah sehingga RM18.6 billion. Untuk peringkat pertama perlaksanaan projek ‘smart school’ yang merupakan dibawah projek aplikasi MSC, kos untuk hanya 90 buah sekolah menjangkau sehingga RM300 juta. Ini bermakna bahawa RM3 juta diperuntukkan untuk setiap satu sekolah dalam tempoh masa 3 tahun. Ini hanyalah kos untuk 90 buah sekolah. Laporan terkini bilangan sekolah diseluruh Malaysia ialah 8,858 buah sekolah. Dalam jumlah itu, 3,085 buah sekolah mempunyai fasiliti komputer manakala hanya 1,298 mempunyai fasiliti lengkap dengan kemudahan internet (Kementerian Pendidikan, 31 Januari).

Berdasarkan bajet 2003, RM29.6 billion atau 27% diperuntukkan kepada sektor pendidikan. Peruntukan ini merupakan angka yang terbesar sekali pernah direkodkan dalam sejarah bajet kerajaan Malaysia.

Kos Memperoleh Lesen Microsoft

Kajian Kes 1: Projek Sains & Matematik dalam Bahasa Inggeris

Kerajaan Malaysia telah membayar Microsoft Corporation jumlah sebanyak RM15 juta untuk perisian MS Office dan Windows XP Profesional untuk projek Sains dan Matematik dalam Bahasa Inggeris pada tahun 2002. Pada tahun 2004, kerajaan telah membayar jumlah sebanyak RM12 – RM15 juta lagi kepada Microsoft untuk projek yang sama akan terus membayar amaun yang sama untuk tempoh 4 tahun lagi. Maka dianggarkan kos yang dibayar kepada Microsoft untuk sepanjang tempoh projek ini ialah sebanyak RM100 juta. Proses pusingan atau ‘cycle process’ ini akan terjadi semula apabila Microsoft mengnaiktarafkan sistem operasinya. (Open Source R&D, 2004 MIMOS Bhd)

Kes Kajian 2: Projek Makmal Komputer Sekolah

Kerajaan Malaysia telah membayar Microsoft jumlah sebanyak RM25 juta untuk projek makmal komputer sekolah pada tahun 2001. Jumlah ini untuk perisian MS Office Professional, MS2000 Server, 5 User CAL OPLA, dan Windows 98. Amaun yang sama juga telah dibayar pada tahun 2002 dan 2003. Jumlah keseluruhan pembayaran kepada Microsoft untuk projek yang sama dianggarkan sebanyak RM150 juta. Di bawah SSO (Shared Service Outfit), kerajaan akan terus membayar Microsoft sebanyak RM500 juta ke atas pelbagai perlesenan produk Microsoft dalam tempoh tiga tahun akan datang dalam proses mengubah kepada sistem komputer untuk agensi kerajaan. Setelah meneliti kedua-dua kajian kes tersebut, dapat dirumuskan bahawa kerajaan telah dan akan membayar jumlah wang yang terlalu banyak untuk perisian komputer. Amaun yang disebutkan itu belum lagi meliputi kos untuk perkakasan yang digunakan dalam pelbagai agensi kerajaan. Oleh itu, salah satu alternatif lain yang dicadangkan ialah dengan menggunakan perisian open source.

Etika Profesional

Pada masa kini, terdapat pelbagai isu-isu yang timbul berikutan salah laku dalam amalan golongan profesional. Hal ini timbul apabila berlaku “kekaburan” dan kepentingan diri dalam menjalankan perkhidmatan. Seringkali kita terdengar mengenai projek-projek yang terbengkalai atau pun projek-projek yang tidak mengikut spesifikasi yang ditetapkan. Sebagai contoh, projek pembinaan makmal komputer di semua sekolah rendah di Malaysia. Mengikut laporan, pada tahun 2002, kontraktor yang bertanggungjawab gagal menyiapkan 2,200 daripada 2,400 makmal komputer di seluruh negara. Hal ini seterusnya menjadi penghalang kepada hasrat kerajaan dalam melaksanakan projek Sekolah Bistari. Selain itu, pembinaan projek tidak mengikut spesifikasi juga berlaku contohnya pembinaan bangunan yang menggunakan bahan yang tidak berkualiti, pendawaian yang tidak betul dan sebagainya. Ini terjadi kerana pihak yang berkaitan tidak mempedulikan obligasinya kepada masyarakat dan hanya ambil pusing hal yang membawa keuntungan kepada empunya diri.

Hal ini seringkali terjadi kepada masyarakat dunia kapitalis yang mementingkan kedudukan kewangan dan status semata-mata. Bahan-bahan yang tidak bermutu telah digunakan semata-mata untuk menjimatkan kos pembangunan. Projek yang tidak mengikut spesifikasi diluluskan oleh orang yang tertentu kerana diberi sejumlah ‘hadiah’ untuk menandatangani kelulusan projek tersebut. Mendapat kemewahan dengan cara yang singkat telah membutakan mata golongan ini dan menyebabkan mereka mengabaikan tanggungjawab yang dipikul semasa melakukan tugas mereka.

Ada juga suara-suara yang berkata bahawa perkara ini adalah norma biasa yang berlaku hari ini dan kita haruslah hanya pandang sebelah mata sahaja. Mengapa ini boleh berlaku? Adakah hanya kerana kita sebagai ahli masyarakat yang tidak mempunyai apa-apa kepentingan ataupun status dalam hieraki masyarakat tidak dapat berbuat apa-apa? Adakah kerana kerenah birokrasi dalam membuat pengaduan semakin kelam dan semakin sukar?

Fenomena ini mencetuskan kebimbangan baik dari pihak kerajaan atau pun masyarakat umum. Seharusnya, terdapat mekanisme yang boleh memantau daripada perkara ini terjadi tetapi realitinya, mekanisme tersebut hanyalah terkandung di atas kertas tanpa penguasaan yang betul-betul efektif. Peranan yang lebih proaktif patut diambil oleh pihak-pihak tertentu yang berkaitan dalam menangani kes seperti ini. Janganlah hanya kerana diugut kita harus tunduk kepada tekanan yang mendatang. Kerjasama daripada semua pihak harus diambil demi untuk memastikan perkara-perkara yang disebut tidak berlaku. Setiap individu seharusnya memastikan bahawa nilai-nilai moral diterapkan dalam diri semasa menjalankan tugas. Ini kerana sebuah dokumen yang menjelaskan mengenai etika hanyalah merupakan garis panduan kepada diri kita sebagai golongan profesional. Terpulang kepada diri kita untuk menentukan kompas moral dan tingkah laku kita.
